CONSIDERED DESIGN

We do exactly that. We consider your design and create spaces to suit individual needs and that’s what sets Bert’s Boxes apart.  Exteriors are clad with Bert & May’s characterful reclaimed timber, whilst the interiors feature our very own handmade encaustic tiles, reclaimed timber floors, underfloor heating throughout  and topped off with an exclusive Bert & May/Red Deer kitchen. The space has been carefully designed to ensure that storage and heating solutions are seamlessly incorporated, whilst the doors and windows have been specially selected to allow for maximum light, airflow and style.

Our 4-step process makes it easy & simple:

1 - Pick your Box - We recognise that some customers will require a site visit from one of our technical team to discuss the services, infrastructure & connectivity to the box.

2 - Pick your materials - The quality of our materials is what makes our Boxes so unique. Select your cladding, flooring, kitchen & paints from the full range of materials from www.BertandMay.com

3 - Place your deposit - We require a 50% deposit to begin the manufacture of your Box.  We will agree a delivery date with you before any monies are exchanged.

4 - Your Box is ready & delivered

Your box will be constructed and delivered to your chosen delivery address 14 weeks after you place your order.

MATERIALS

Bert & May are specialists in unique and original materials. The Big Box is designed from a range of unique reclaimed tiles and wood sourced by Bert and May, including Alalpardo black and white encaustic tiles and weathered barn oak.

ECO-FRIENDLY

The Big Box boasts the latest in eco-friendly insulation, as well as green living roofs planted with wild flowers to encourage biodiversity, absorb rainwater, maintain warmth in the winter and cool in the summer and look great!

Bert & May work with Eco specialist consultants, Green Tomato, who offer a wide variety of add on renewables packages to suit your individual requirements.

The Green Solution

This package includes a 2 kWp solar photovoltaic system from SunEdison’s high performing Silvantis range of panels, with an industry-leading Solar Edge inverter and a single panel solar thermal system from Viridian.  The panels of each of these systems are aesthetically pleasing (all black) and will integrate into any location. The SunEdison photovoltaic system will generate up to a quarter of the Boxes’ electricity and hot water consumption (depending on usage) using carbon-friendly solar energy without compromise on aesthetics or load.  The systems each qualify for the Government subsidies, which should, in addition to the carbon savings, which you make, provide an index-linked return on investment of up to 8% per annum.

The Greener Solution

This package includes a 3.8 kWp solar photovoltaic system from SunEdison’s high performing Silvantis range of panels, with an industry-leading Solar Edge inverter and a single panel solar thermal system from Viridian.  The panels of each of these systems are aesthetically pleasing (all black) and will integrate into any location. The SunEdison photovoltaic system will generate up to a half of the Boxes’ electricity and hot water consumption (depending on usage) using carbon-friendly solar energy without compromise on aesthetics or load.  The system also includes a battery that stores the clean energy, which has been generated but not used. Uniquely, this will allow the occupants to use the electricity at night, even when there’s no light, self-containing the Box even more.  The systems each qualify for the Government subsidies, which should, in addition to the carbon savings that you make, will provide an index-linked return on investment of up to 8% per annum.

We can even provide you with on-going carbon saving data.

They work closely with their clients to create home cinema and multi-room systems.

Watermark - www.watermark-designs.com

All of the brassware in the Bathroom & Kitchen of Burt’s Box is made, finished and assembled in Brooklyn, NY, by a melting pot of artisans and craftspeople who have been making brassware since 1976.

Bert’s Box uses a range called “Brooklyn” and is shown in a unique finish combination of Gunmetal and Aged Brass that is only available to customers purchasing a Bert’s Box.

In the space you can see a Wall Mounted Basin Mixer Set, a Thermostatic Shower Mixer, Ceiling Mounted Overhead Shower & Kitchen Set with Pull Out Rinse Off Spray featuring their  unique smooth running hose.

The company was formed out of a passion for metal finishing by its founder Herman Abel, and, 3 generations later, it’s his secret formulas that are still used today to produce their infinitely touchable finishes.

To ensure they can apply their finishes to every component, all of their products are 100% constructed from brass (you won’t find any plastic Showerheads in Watermark ranges). The brass  used is Lead Free, sourced from just around the corner of their factory – it’s expensive, but it ensures the purest provision of water possible for the user.

Met Therm Windows Ltd - www.metthermwindows.co.uk

Met Therm Windows have produced all of the doors and windows for Bert’s Boxes.  The AG210 window is an the slimmest A rated, metal window available offering the traditional styling of original steel windows:  all windows are multipoint locked, with welded hinges and peg-stays, and welded corners as standard, whilst providing the comforts and benefits of the modern double glazed window.  Polyester powder coating in a wide range of RAL colours and finishes offers a virtually maintenance free frame.

Being compliant to Part L of  Build Control the AG210 is ideal for both replacement and new build projects.  All windows and doors are made to measure by hand by skilled craftsman to meet your individual needs.

The Water Monopoly - www.thewatermonopoly.com

We have developed an exclusive replica range with them which reflects this ethos. Their stock includes vintage copper tubs, prized for their original patina, as well as ceramic baths and basins, glamorous tri-fold mirrors, swan-neck taps and canopied shower units.   Sitting side-by-side with the originals are faithful reproductions of fireclay tubs in stone and resin and cast iron batch made from recycled brake discs! Further Information

Our pre-fabricated homes have the structural integrity of a conventional building. By completing nearly all of the works at the factory, the time required on-site is virtually diminished. This significantly reduces the noise and general pollution, as well as waste, created by a traditional building site.

Our boxes require minimal groundwork and foundations.

Upon completion of building works, each box is wired and fitted with first fix plumbing and electrics. Further, they are decorated and even in some cases furnished.

Our boxes, which come in two pieces, are shrink wrapped and handed over to the logistics team.

The install team follow the box to site and oversee the sitting, connection and commissioning. Once the box arrives on site, it is simply unwrapped and craned into position.

The 2 Bedroom Big Box, our largest box, takes no more than a day to put together on site.

Whether you are looking for a woodland lodge, an office for the garden or a floating home, we can work with you to realise your vision.

Each box comes with a standard 10 year structural guarantee.

Please contact us on 020 3673 3673 or design@bertandmay.com for further information on foundations, and transport and craning costs.

Our dedicated Spaces team will be happy to assist you with any other queries.

Planning Information

All of the boxes Bert and May Spaces offer fall within the legal definition of a “mobile home”.  This represents significant planning advantages if you do not wish to apply for planning consent for an additional unit.

The laws relating to touring caravans also apply to mobile home and static caravans: a type that can be significantly larger and suitable for year-round residential accommodation.

A mobile home is regarded in law as an article of movable personal property known as a ‘chattel’ and there is no public law preventing one being kept in someone’s garden, but there are Laws that regulate the ‘Use’ of land.

Can I Place my Box in the Garden?

The siting of a caravan within the garden of a property does not require express consent provided a ‘material change of use’ has not occurred. Gardens are used for the enjoyment of the main dwelling house. If a caravan is parked in a drive or sited in a garden and used by members of the household in connection to the enjoyment of the house or as extra accommodation for visiting guests, provided the occupants continue to use the facilities of the house, then the siting of the caravan has not changed the ‘use’ of the land. However, if for example a caravan is sited in a garden and used as business premises, separately rented or used as a primary independent dwelling, with no relation to the main house, the local planning Authority could decide that an unauthorized ‘material change of use’ has occurred, for which planning permission will be required.

Mobile Homes and Caravans can be sited and used in a garden without the need for express planning consent. If the use is not considered part of, or incidental to, the house, then a ‘material change of use’ may have occurred. If the caravan is not considered to conform to the definition of a caravan then ‘building operations’ may have been carried out. In either case, planning permission will be required.

Berts Boxes may all be classified as a “ mobile home” but the following factors must be considered.

Location

The Caravan must be in the ‘Curtilage’ of a dwelling house. This is the drive or garden, not an adjoining paddock or farmland, for example.

Use

The use must accompany the house, used by a family member or guest  accommodation for example and not rented as a private residence or a separate dwelling or business premises.

Structure

The actual structure must conform to the legal definition of a ‘caravan’ based on its size, mobility and construction method.  The maximum size of a caravan is limited to 20 x 6.8m.

Conclusion

A mobile home can be used in a garden without planning but you will need to justify how the use of the caravan supports the use of the house and how it will not become a separate or independent dwelling.
